Fonsi hangs on to pole as Melandri and Porto swap positions

Fonsi Nieto improved his provisional time by three tenths of a second to consolidate a comfortable sixth pole position of the season at Brno. Marco Melandri was second fastest, edging Sebastian Porto down to third place on the grid, although even the championship leader could not get within half a second of the Spaniard. Porto failed to improve his time from yesterday but held on to a front row position ahead of Robeto Locatelli, who turned in a brave performance after a big crash in the morning practice.

The first rider to make a notable improvement on his provisional time was Naoki Matsudo, who broke onto the front row in fourth place after twenty minutes only to slide back down to eighth. Locatelli soon established himself in the final front row slot, holding off the challenge of Franco Battaini who now heads a second row which also features Roby Rolfo, Toni Elías and Matsudo.
