Kato excels at HRC tests in Valencia

HRC official riders Valentino Rossi, Tohru Ukawa and Daijiro Kato were the main protagonists of two days of MotoGP testing at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia on Thursday and Friday. 250cc World Champion Kato, who rode to second place in his first start aboard the Honda RC211V at Brno last weekend, set the quickest time of the day with a best lap of 1´34.04, almost half a second under the pole record at the Spanish venue, set by Max Biaggi last season.

The focus of the test for the HRC riders was mainly on tyres, although they also completed work on front and rear suspension combinations. Kato completed 147 laps over the two day test whilst Tohru Ukawa clocked up a massive 166 laps and registered a best time of 1´34.19. Rossi was the slowest of the three riders, posting a fastest time of 1´34.62 from 141 laps. The Repsol Honda and Fortuna Honda Gresini crews also experimented with new settings for the 990cc four stroke engine and gathered some set-up information for the final race of the 2002 season, set to be held at the Cheste racetrack on the 3rd November.

`It has been a very good test with the best weather we could have hoped for,´ declared a team official. `The track was understandably a little slippery on the first day but apart from that the conditions were perfect. We are satisfied with the results of the tyre tests and the new setting for the engine was also a success´.
