Italy on course for new records in MotoGP

Italy are in line to overtake the USA in the ranking of overall top class Grand Prix victories by country, and could complete the feat by the end of the season. Eddie Lawson (31), Kevin Schwantz (25), Wayne Rainey (24), Kenny Roberts Sr. (22) and Freddie Spencer (20) are the main contributors to an overall total of 150 for the Americans.

Giacomo Agostini (68) has clocked up most wins for the Italians whilst Valentino Rossi (21) is already second in a national ranking which amounts to 144 victories overall. Eight wins so far for the Honda rider in MotoGP this season added to one for Max Biaggi have brought the country within touching distance of the United States, who have not won a single race since Kenny Roberts won the Pacific Grand Prix at Motegi in October 2000.

Third place in the ranking by country remains property of Great Britain with 138 victories. The last British win in the top class came courtesy of Barry Sheene, who beat van Dulmen and Middelburg in the Swedish Grand Prix at Anderstorp in 1981.
