Poggiali takes provisional pole after crash escape

Manuel Poggiali cut a determined figure as he charged his way to provisional pole position at the circuit of Estoril in Portugal today. Poggiali was on the pace from the start of the session, keen to re-establish his status as the top rider in the class after some disappointing recent performances, clocking a fast lap of 1´46.960 after seven minutes but escaping a dangerous highside as he hung on to his Gilera after being thrown into the air. The World Champion´s early effort was good enough for top spot throughout the session and was only bettered by his own final effort of 1´46.872.

Youichi Ui, who finished second to Poggiali in last year´s race, looked more like his old self when he shook off the disappointment of a fruitless season to clock the second fastest time of the day. Steve Jenkner and Daniel Pedrosa complete the provisional front row after lapping around half a second slower than the series leader.

Arnaud Vincent, the main challenger to Poggiali´s crown alongside Pedrosa, crashed during the afternoon session and could only qualify in seventh. Italian pair Simone Sanna and Mirko Giansanti qualified ahead of the Frenchman on the provisional second row whilst pole man in Brno Alex de Angelis was eighth fastest. Noboru Ueda returned to action for the first time since his crash at Mugello and qualified eighteenth.
