Checa takes first pole with Yamaha in MotoGP

Carlos Checa took his first pole in the revised MotoGP class and his first ever with Yamaha as he blasted the previous record at Estoril by 0.3 seconds today. In a session which was almost washed out by rain, Checa eventually emerged to heat up a cool and damp track, dislodging Alex Barros from provisional pole with five minutes remaining of the session and then improving his effort still further as the chequered flag was waved.

With a light drizzle falling at the beginning of the session many riders returned to boxes and watched a lonely Regis Laconi guide his Aprilia through the wet on their pit box TV screens. When the track did begin to dry it was McWilliams on the Proton KR3 who was the first to better his provisional time, eventually qualifying sixth, before Checa went on the charge.

HRC pair Kato and Rossi tried to dislodge the Spaniard in the final stages but could only manage second and third respectively. Barros makes up the front row whilst Biaggi, Capirossi and Ukawa will join McWilliams on the second row when the Grande Premio Marlboro de Portugal gets underway tomorrow.
