Team Honda Gresini celebrate 100th Grand Prix at Estoril

The MotoGP paddock was today openly invited to join Team Honda Gresini as they celebrate their 100th Grand Prix at Estoril this weekend. The squad, owned by former 125cc World Champion Fausto Gresini, marked the occasion with a huge cake which was cut by current riders Daijiro Kato, Roberto Rolfo and Emilio Alzamora. Also on display was a photographic collage featuring the highlights of the team´s achievements over the century of races.

The team first came together in 1997 with Alex Barros, riding a Honda NSR500 V2 supported by Honda Brazil, finishing the season in ninth place. The following season the Brazilian finished fifth, riding a V4, but in 1999 the team moved into the 250 class, linking up with HRC to provide an official NSR to Loris Capirossi. The year 2000 was the start of a glorious era for Team Honda Gresini, as Daijiro Kato arrived from Japan to revolutionise the Grand Prix world.

Kato, of course, went on to win the 250 title in his second season and is now on course to challenge MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi on the four stroke RC211V. Team Honda Gresini, who boast a total of 18 wins from their 100 starts in the two classes, are also defending their quarter-litre title this season with Rolfo and Alzamora.
