Sito Pons speaks about the departure of Capirossi

Sito Pons has enjoyed a fruitful three years since signing former 250cc World Champion Loris Capirossi. Alongside Alex Barros, the Italian has contributed with five pole positions, 14 podium finishes, 24 front row starts and one victory from 41 Grand Prix. The pair led West Honda Pons to the Team of the Year title in 2001 and have fought bravely in the face of the four stroke revolution in 2002. However, after Capirossi´s decision to join Ducati, Pons must prepare for a new era without the diminutive hero, and he spoke to about the decision.

`First of all I have to say that Loris Capirossi is a great rider and a great person,´ declared Pons, himself a former 250cc World Champion. `We have worked shoulder to shoulder for the last three years and I think we are all more than satisfied with how things went. To be honest, though, I think that he has let his heart rule his head on this occasion. The opportunity to ride for an Italian factory was a huge emotional attraction for him and I can understand why he went for it, but I think his motives are sentimental rather than practical, because from a technical point of view he will not have any more chance of winning races than he would if he stayed here´.

Looking to the future, Pons knows it is a huge challenge to replace a rider of Capirossi´s quality, but revealed that the search has been ongoing for some time. `We have been aware of Loris´ situation for some time and we have talked openly about it. I knew there was a chance this offer would prove too strong for him, and we already have certain options available to us in terms of a replacement. We have not signed anything with anyone though, not even Alex Barros, so for the time being we have an open mind on what our squad will look like next season´.
