Azuma takes his tenth victory in Brazil

Masao Azuma won the 125 Cinzano Rio Grand Prix after he produced a thrilling late charge to pip Arnaud Vincent and Manuel Poggiali for victory. The two main title contenders were fighting for the lead when the Japanese star closed on them with five laps to go. Azuma easily took the lead on lap 17 and brought his Honda home in first position. Behind him, Vincent demoted Poggiali to third on the last lap and by doing so he increased his series lead to 27 points over the reigning World Champion.

The other contender for the title, Daniel Pedrosa, lost more ground after a disappointing race in Portugal, as he crashed out on the third lap. Cecchinello also went out in the early stages of the race, but recovered to take 10th.

Gabor Talmacsi once again showed his talent as he rode among the front runners during the first couple of laps. He eventually finished in fourth, ahead of Pablo Nieto and Stefano Perugini. Seventh was Spanish youngster Jorge Lorenzo, who finished ahead of the ever-improving Mika Kallio.
