Kato takes debut MotoGP pole on home territory

Daijiro Kato was unable to improve on his best time at Motegi, but his pole record lap from yesterday was enough to ensure that he will start from the front of Sunday´s grid. Max Biaggi was also unable to improve his provisional qualifying time but his second place was only seriously threatened by Loris Capirossi, who lapped half a second under his previous pole record here last year to put the NSR500 on the front row in third place. The final front row position went to Carlos Checa, who lapped just two tenths slower than pole setter Kato.

With one RC211V on pole position, the other three had to settle for the second row, with V5 debutante Alex Barros qualifying in fifth place ahead of World Champion Valentino Rossi and Tohru Ukawa. Rossi could only improve his provisional time by two tenths and will start behind Barros in sixth place.

Kenny Roberts took the final second row position aboard the Suzuki, whilst Akira Yanagawa and the Kawasaki dropped back to 18th after a crash in the early stages of the session.
