Pedrosa dominates to take fifth career pole

Daniel Pedrosa consolidated provisional pole position with a dominating display in the final qualifying session here at Motegi this afternoon. The Spaniard bettered his time from yesterday after just three minutes, continually improving before setting a new pole record at the Japanese track in front of the watching eyes of Honda officials.

Pedrosa lapped six tenths of a second under the previous record set by Youichi Ui, clocking 1'58.026 to take his fifth pole position of the season. Only Manuel Poggiali was able to get close to the youngster, guiding his Gilera to within one tenth of top spot with just over a minute remaining. Pedrosa responded with a new best lap as Poggiali was foiled by the chequered flag as he mounted a late attack.

Steve Jenkner and series leader Arnaud Vincent will complete the front row tomorrow, whilst Italian pair Andrea Dovizioso and Lucio Cecchinello join Spaniards Pablo Nieto and Héctor Barberá on the second row.
