Elías continues form with provisional pole at Sepang
Toni Elías continued his excellent recent form at Sepang this afternoon, following up his excellent showing in practice with provisional pole in difficult conditions. A light rain at the start of the session meant riders had to go out on wet tyres, but as the track slowly dried in the humid conditions an exciting battle for pole ensued in the final 20 minutes. The time set by Elias was still around a second outside of the pole record clocked by Daijiro Kato last year, but it was a well contested finale as Fonsi Nieto moved to the top of the time sheets with about six minutes remaining. Sebastian Porto took control with less than a minute to go but late efforts from Elías and Marco Melandri relegated him to third, with Nieto pushed out to fourth. The provisional second row sees the Honda machines of Roby Rolfo and Emilio Alzamora alongside the Aprilias of Randy De Puniet and Franco Battaini.
