Melandri gets a second bite of the cherry in Australia

Marco Melandri will this weekend get his second chance to lift the 250cc World Championship after leaving Sepang empty handed. Fonsi Nieto took maximum points in Malaysia to maintain his title hopes, with Melandri now requiring exactly the same mathematical points combination in Australia that would have sealed him the crown last Sunday .

The Italian has a 27 point adfvantage over the Spaniard and must maintain a gap of 25 going to Valencia for what could otherwise be a decisive final round on Nieto´s home territory. Melandri will be World Champion this weekend if he finishes ahead of Nieto. If he finishes behind Nieto on the podium he will again miss out because he can afford to concede no more than two points to his rival.

´What happened at Sepang can only be described as terrible bad luck,´ said the MS Aprilia rider. `The situation is more complicated now because Elías and Nieto can work as a team over the next two races and I am on my own. I will have to give my maximum to fight for this title and I will try everything I can to make sure I have the success to counterbalance the bad luck I had last Sunday ´.
