Poggiali wins and closes on Vincent

By winning in Phillip Island, Manuel Poggiali reduced the lead of Arnaud Vincent to just eight points. The Frenchman could have secured the title in Australia, but he finished 4th as he couldn't squeeze through in the last couple of laps, after the riders of the leading pack swapped positions all race long.

Indeed, seven riders had been fighting for the lead. Alex de Angelis was one of them until he retired on the 16th lap because of a mechanical failure. In the late stages of the race, Lucio Cecchinello, Manuel Poggiali, Arnaud Vincent, Daniel Pedrosa, Simone Sanna and Pablo Nieto had to duck it out.

In the penultimate lap, Manuel Poggiali pushed to overtake race leader Lucio Cecchinello, while Vincent made an unsuccessful attempt to take a podium finish. In the end, Poggiali took this fourth win of the season, the first one since the Marlboro Catalunya Grand Prix in June. Vincent, fourth behind Pablo Nieto, still leads the Championship. The 125cc title will be determined in Valencia, where will be held the final round of the season.
