Rossi takes 50th GP win ahead of Barros

In Phillip Island, Valentino Rossi has beaten Alex Barros to earn his 50th GP career win ; it was the 11th time the Italian topped the podium this year. The MotoGP World Champion took the lead from fellow Honda rider Alex Barros after the Brazilian led for most of the race.

Barros and Rossi built up a steady gap from the fifth lap, after Capirossi had to retire due to a front fork problem on his NSR500. Valentino Rossi took the lead with four laps to go. Barros didn't give up and tried to regain the lead until he went straight out after he failed to overtake the Italian in the last lap. Fortunately, the West Honda Pons rider was able to recover from his off track excursion to take second ahead of Tohru Ukawa.

Rossi's Japanese team mate eventually took third after a hard fought race against Kato and Vd Goorbergh. Max Biaggi was sixth ahead of Aoki and Jacque. Poleman Jeremy McWilliams went out in the early stages of the race, but recovered to take 10th ahead of Checa and Gibernau.
