Andrea Dovizioso satisfied with his first season

The 125cc World Championship draws to a close at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia next weekend with all eyes on the fight for the title between Arnaud Vincent and Manuel Poggiali. The high profile battle which has ensued between the Aprilia and Gilera men has eclipsed the achievements of many other riders in the second half of the season, such as 16 year old Italian Andrea Dovizioso, who has consolidated his place in Grand Prix with some progressively consistent performances.

Dovizioso took a season best grid position of fifth at Motegi earlier this month before crashing out of a battle for second place with Vincent in the race, whilst at Phillip Island he qualified as the highest Honda rider ahead of Dani Pedrosa in ninth. `I didn´t expect things to go so well at the start of the season but after the second race in South Africa I saw that I could be near the front and began to think that a podium was possible,´ comments the youngster. `This hasn´t been possible so far but I can´t really complain´.

With one race to go the Italian is running out of time to achieve his podium dream in 2002, but unlike most of the other circuits on the calendar he has ridden at Valencia before and is confident he can make a challenge. `I know the circuit from some tests we did there – it is small and not easy. We didn´t get good times there but in my experience that doesn´t necessarily mean that we can´t do well in the race. We had poor times in tests at Catalunya but I was at the front in the race – even though I eventually crashed out´.

125cc, 2002, Andrea Dovizioso
