Barros continues form in Valencia sunshine

Alex Barros continued his extraordinary form aboard the Honda RC211V as he set a new pole record of 1´33.584 at the Ricardo Tormo circuit this afternoon. The Brazilian was almost a second under the previous record set by Max Biaggi in the first qualifying session for the Gran Premio Marlboro de la Comunitat Valenciana, with the Italian just 0.054 seconds behind him in second place. The provisional front row is completed by Daijiro Kato and Valentino Rossi.

Barros crashed out at the end of the session but Biaggi and Kato were the only men to truly challenge for top spot on the time sheets, which Barros had dominated from the tenth minute onwards. Whilst Kato came within 0.003 seconds of Biaggi, Rossi was not in contention as he set a best lap of 1´34.159.

Shinya Nakano has impressed in his third outing aboard the Yamaha M1, setting the fourth fastest time of the session ahead of his factory peer Carlos Checa. Jeremy McWilliams and Garry McCoy were the best of the two-strokes, as they were at Phillip Island two weeks ago, and they complete the provisional second row in seventh and eight respectively. The session was watched with interest by future MotoGP stars Nicky Hayden and Colin Edwards, who kept a close eye on their new rivals from pit-lane.
