Pedrosa and Barberá head the provisional grid

Daniel Pedrosa took provisional pole position at the Ricardo Tormo circuit this afternoon whilst Spanish compatriot Héctor Barberá was the surprise of the session with the second fastest time. Barberá made the most of information gathered during mid-season tests here in August to lap faster than Arnaud Vincent and Youichi Ui, who make up the provisional front row. Vincent takes the psychological advantage from Manuel Poggiali on the first day of their title showdown weekend at Valencia, with the Gilera rider struggling to make the pace in the first half of the session and then suffering from a mechanical breakdown. He did eventually improve his times at the end of the session to move up to the second row in eighth position, seven tenths slower than Vincent and one second off the pole pace set by Pedrosa.

Mika Kallio was fifth fastest to head the provisional second row from Mirko Giansanti, Pablo Nieto and Poggiali. Meanwhile it was a rough afternoon for Lucio Cecchinello, who saw his team-mate Alex de Angelis crash out early in the session only to suffer the same fate himself in spectacular fashion in the dying stages.
