Angel Rodriguez returns as a quarter-litre wildcard

Angel Rodriguez started the season as a hot tip for 125cc glory and one of the most promising prospects in Spanish motorcycling. The 17 year old, who had an outstanding rookie season in 2001 with a string of top ten finishes, started the year with seventh place at Suzuka but crashed out of six of the next seven races despite solid performances in qualifying. After only his third points scoring finish at the Sachsenring he parted ways with the Master-Aspar Team and this weekend makes his return as a 250 rider with Racing Damas.

`I had got too heavy for the 125 and it probably wasn´t as fast as it should have been so we were fighting an uphill battle,´ said Rodriguez, who was born just a few kilometres from the Ricardo Tormo circuit. `I had my differences with Jorge Martinez Aspar and we split – that´s all there is to it. Now I am back on a 250 and I am happy because I haven´t raced for a long time. It is a satisfactory end to a disappointing season.´ $$$ Despite the extra power and speed of the quarter-litre Aprilia, `Rodri´ has been unfazed in his first outing this weekend and is even hopeful of a points scoring finish on Sunday. `The differences between the 125 and the 250 are obvious, but I don´t find it harder to ride at all. Cornering is about pretty much the same principles and I think the bigger bike suits me because I have grown a lot lately. We have rented the bike for this weekend but this team will be ready for a full entry in 2003 and I believe we can take a step towards that with at least one championship point.´
