Daniel Pedrosa takes home pole

Daniel Pedrosa gave a clear indication of his disregard for the 125cc title battle and his desire to finish the 2002 season on a high note as he took pole position for the Gran Premio marlboro de la Comunitat Valenciana this afternoon. The Honda youngster defended his provisional pole in dominant style, getting off to a blistering start as he improved his best effort from yesterday after just eight minutes of the session on three consecutive laps.

After a disappointing session yesterday Manuel Poggiali also made early progress as he moved up to fourth after six minutes and made continuous progress to pull within one tenth of pole. Pablo Nieto was just 0.043 seconds behind the defending World Champion with Arnaud Vincent a further tenth behind the Spaniard. The Frenchman set a late fast lap to muscle his way on to the outside of the front row as he looks to defend an eight point advantage over Poggiali in the final round.

Rising Spanish talent Héctor Barberá crashed in the first few minutes of the session and will start from the second row after failing to improve on his time from yesterday, the second fastest in first qualifying. The youngster will line up behind Alex De Angelis and ahead of Steve Jenkner and Gino Borsoi.
