Colin Edwards and Noriyuki Haga join Aprilia for 2003

Aprilia announced its line-up for the next MotoGP Championship. The Noale-based firm will field two riders in 2003 : Colin Edwards and Noriyuki Haga. Edwards, reigning World Superbike Champion, will bring his extensive knowledge of 4-stroke racing and will make his debut season in the blue riband class. His new team mate, Noriyuki Haga, competed in last year 500cc Championship and joined Aprilia this year to race in the Superbike Championship.

´I have always wanted the MotoGP project to go forward, in the hope that it will become a centre of technological and sporting excellence in Aprilia´ said Ivano Beggio, president of Aprilia. ´The results of the first year of development work on the bike will act as a launching pad towards greater competitiveness next season. The project has solid foundations and plenty of room for improvement, so it is hardly a surprise that we have decided to double our commitment next year. We are putting great emphasis on the innovation and evolution we are capable of, as well as on the talent of the two riders selected for the 2003 challenge. I urge them and all the technicians to continue to do their utmost so that we can reach some tangible results in the near future´.

The italian constructor has also announced they will join the Michelin shod teams next year : an agreement was reached with the french tyre manufacturer, coming as a part of medium/long term program for the Aprilia MotoGP project. After a first season dedicated to the development of the RS Cube, Jan Witteveen, chief of the Aprilia Racing Department, stressed that the 4-stroke division appointed a special workgroup dedicated to MotoGP. ´We´ve got to carry on developing every aspect of the project to take it to a higher level of competitiveness´ said Witteveen. Aprilia will kick off winter testing program in a couple of weeks´ time, in Spain.
