Porto looks back on his 2002 campaign and talks about the future

After a successful campaign, Sebastian Porto is enjoying a few days´ break in his hometown, Rafaela, in Argentina, with his friend and family. ´Sebas´ shares his thoughts about a season that saw him break his duck in Brazil, and also talks about a seemingly bright future.

´It was a great year. The top 5 was the objective I set at the start of the season and I achieved it. It seemed pretty ambitious, because I knew I had a good bike, but not as good as the best ones. We took an important step at the mid-season mark, in Assen. It was not about getting new parts, but mostly getting the bike suited to my liking. Then I began to get the results, podiums including my first victory´.

After waiting beyond his 100th GP appearance to take his maiden win, the argentinean confirmed his new ´top rider´ status in the late stages of the Championship. ´It wasn´t a surprise for me. I had been working hard during two years, trying to be the best privateer, knowing that a podium finish would have been out of reach in normal conditions. Then I realized it was ´my´ year, and the results would important for my future´.

Number 5 of the 2002 World Championship, Porto now has to make a choice between various offers : ´I´ll take a decision within a week. I could make the switch to MotoGP, but I think I´ll spend another season in the 250. I have interesting offers from Aprilia and Honda. Whatever my choice is, I´ll ride an official bike with full factory support, and I´ll be able to fight for the title. It will be the first time I´ll start the season in such conditions and I want to work over the winter in order to be ready for the start of the season´.
