Fausto Gresini drops 250 effort to concentrate on MotoGP in 2003

Fausto Gresini, owner of the Fortuna Honda Gresini team, looks back on the 2002 season and reveals his plans for 2003:

`In MotoGP it was a difficult debut year for Kato. It was a new category, a new bike, new tyres and he had to learn quickly. Then, in the Czech Republic, the four-stroke arrived. For us it was a privilege to be the first private team to be given the bike by HRC, but it brought new difficulties for Daijiro. It was unlikely that the combination of rider and bike were going to turn into winning results straight away, but the truth is that the results we expected did not come about. However, the responsibility of that does not just fall on the shoulders of the rider but of the whole team.

`It was also a first season in MotoGP for the rest of the team and we all needed time to adapt and grow. I think Kato has demonstrated his ability and value but there is room for improvement. Basically, the 2002 season was positive and we have worked very hard to gather valuable information for 2003. If my objective up to now was to have a competitive MotoGP team, the challenge now is to win the title. I know perfectly well that it won´t be easy but it is difficult challenges that I love the most. $$$

`In 2003 Sete Gibernau has a fantastic opportunity. He will be riding the Honda which has been the bike to beat so far in MotoGP. I can see he is very motivated and in our team he will find the passion which has characterised us over recent years. We are already preparing for next season. We have done one test in Valencia and next month we have two sessions lined up, in Valencia and Jerez. Only Kato will test because Sete will not have a bike ready until the end of December. The two riders will be together for the first time at Sepang in January.

`In 250 the result we all wanted, the victory, was missing. We made the podium on numerous occasions, Roberto Rolfo seven and Emilio Alzamora two, but our maximum target was not reached. If we fight, it is to win. It has been a positive year, even though it was more difficult than past seasons. We are sad to announce that we will be quitting the 250 class because it was our launchpad and it gave us great opportunities – like the World Championship title in 2001.
