Régis Laconi looks back on a tough season

Régis Laconi returned to the GP fold at the start of the 2002 season thanks to Aprilia, with the task to develop the new Italian 4-stroke, the RS Cube. After a promising start, his comeback soon turned out to be more complicated than expected.

´We got off to a good start to the season,´ reflects the Frenchman. `The team did a good job at the start of the year, but we didn´t improve as quick as we should have. Important modifications were needed, like gaining weight. Unfortunately, all those things that would have allowed us to improve never came. From the mid-season onwards, we stalled at the same level while the others never stopped improving. We hadn´t always been heading in the right direction and we lost time. The budget was also a bit restricted to develop the bike. It was tough, as I tried all I could to make the bike more competitive´. $$$ Despite all his efforts, the MS Aprilia team had a disappointing second half of the season, with the Italian constructor eventually dropping Laconi in favour of WSB stars Colin Edwards and Nori Haga. ´I respect their decision, as I know this choice was motivated by others reasons than what happened on the track. Anyway, it doesn´t take anything from what I did this year. All this work will be useful for next year´s bike and other riders will enjoy the fruits of my work, it´s frustrating. I know I did my best, that´s the most important´.

Without a MotoGP ride, Régis Laconi will head back to the WSB in 2003, but he hopes to have another opportunity to race in the blue riband class in the future. ´It´s a shame to see the French riders left with so little support. I´m the only French rider who has won in the premier class and I know I deserve a ride in Grand Prix racing. Anyway, I won´t give up, I can only hope for better fortune !´.
