Roberto Rolfo the best of the rest in 2002

Roberto Rolfo was the closest rider to victory in 2002 without ever tasting the victory champagne in the 250cc class. The Italian rode his Honda to second place on no fewer than five occasions and clocked 43 laps as race leader. His most famous flirtation with victory, of course, came at the Sachsenring when he held a clear lead as Melandri crashed - only for the race to be stopped due to rain and maximum points awarded to the Aprilia rider.

The only other quarter-litre riders to have led races this season without taking a single victory are Naoki Matsudo, with 22 laps at the front of the pack, Roberto Locatelli with seven and Haruchika Aoki with three. Toni Elías, meanwhile, completed just three laps as race leader but took one victory whilst Sebastian Porto also had one win, although he clocked up an impressive 34 laps as leader over the course of the season.

Marco Melandri led almost half of the total laps in 2002, with a massive 174 on his way to the World Championship crown. Fonsi Nieto finished runner-up after leading for less than half the amount of laps as Melandri with just 61.
