Stefano Bianco signed by Gilera for 2003

Gilera have confirmed that they have signed Stefano Bianco to ride for them in the 125cc World Championship in 2003. The 17 year old Italian will take the place of Manuel Poggiali and will be the factory´s sole entry, with the support of the Derbi-Gilera technical structure directed by Olivier Liegeois.

`To unveil a new rider is always an important occasion,´ explained Giampiero Sacchi, Managing Director of Derbi-Gilera. `I personally remember the experience of young talents such as Rossi and Poggiali, who have gone on to be World Champions. Things don´t always work out that way but, in any case, the arrival of a promising new rider to a team generates excitement. It is a new adventure and a new era for us and we hope it will be a happy and productive one. Stefano is a young rider with great potential´. $$$

`He has been criticised for his crashes but I think that when a youngster falls he must be giving his absolute maximum. We will see what happens when Stefano stops falling and is able to show off his true talent´, added Sacchi.

Bianco contested the 2002 season with the Bossini Sterilgarda Racing team and finished 19th in the 125cc World Championship. The team hope he can make his Gilera debut in private tests at the Almeria circuit in mid-January.
