Antonio Cobas explains the development programme for the Honda RC211V

Team Honda Pons made the most of official HRC tests at the Jerez circuit this week to carry forward development work on the Honda RC211V which will be ridden by Tohru Ukawa and Max Biaggi next season. The team´s Technical Director Antonio Cobas spoke to motograndprix.com about the development programme for the machine ahead of the MotoGP 2003 season.

`Our plans have actually changed with the arrival of Ukawa, who is a factory rider,´ explained Cobas. `At the Jerez test we worked partly with HRC, trying out many new parts and weighing up our options for the 2003 season. It is a logical process and this is the correct time to do this work. We have even tested some part that we didn´t expect to have. This is the way a factory team works and in the case of Tohru we are in the process of bringing this bike on. It can be a repetitive task because you have to try out many different solutions and can end up making five different changes so that the rider feels more comfortable.´ $$$

`Biaggi is a different case´, continues the highly-respected tuner. `His 2003 machine is under construction in Japan and his mechanics are at the factory right now overseeing everything. In January Max will have the new bike´. The team plan to be back on track towards the end of next month at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia, with Biaggi and Ukawa lapping together. The next phase of development will be at the same circuit one month later, in February.
