Alex Hofmann continues testing role with Kawasaki in Sepang

Alex Hofmann has followed up initial tests with the Kawasaki team in Valencia at the end of the season to take part in the latest stage of development as an official test rider at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia. Alongside Australian pair Garry McCoy and Andrew Pitt ,and Japanese factory stalwart Akira Yanagawa, the German rider has been helping prepare the Ninja ZX-RR for the 2003 MotoGP World Championship and he was happy to explain his new role.

´Yesterday I mainly concentrated on tyre testing, and went through ten different rears with different constructions and compounds,´ commented Hofmann. `Instead of the new fuel-injected Grand Prix machine, I used Kawasaki´s first development prototype with carburettors. Dunlop is working with different constructions, different compounds and different dimensions in order to find the general direction in which to go in the future, and it´s my job to help find this direction. Today´s plan was to test a new slipper clutch and some more tyres, but then the rain spoiled things a bit. At the end of the day, I compared two sets of rain tyres. On the set that didn´t work so well, I had a big slide. That was a lot of fun – my next goal is to do the same thing in dry conditions!´.

Hofmann this year contested four rounds of the MotoGP World Championship, two with Red Bull Yamaha and two with West Honda Pons. His best results came at Assen, where he finished eleventh on the YZR500 and at his home round at Sachsenring where he took tenth aboard the NSR500.

Two tropical downpours interrupted Kawasaki´s progress in Malaysia today, once in the morning and then again in the afternoon. McCoy did make progress in terms of lap times, however, clocking a best lap of 2.07.5 – around one and a half seconds quicker than yesterday.
