Camier family take Grand Prix gamble for Leon

British representation in Grand Prix racing will be boosted in 2003 as young Kent hopeful Leon Camier looks to make a permanent step up to international competition. The teenager, who became the youngest ever 125cc British Champion in 2001 as he clinched the title at just 15 years of age, contested three rounds of the 2002 125cc World Championship on an under-powered Italjet machine with little success, but this year he returns for a full time ride with the Racing Service team on a Honda.

`Obviously I am very happy to have signed the deal and excited to get started,´ says Camier. `It is the same team as last year but the Honda should be much more competitive than the Italjet. We haven´t got any sponsors yet, which is proving to be a real problem because my parents have had to sell the house to help finance the deal. It looks like we will be living in a caravan, so if anybody out there can help us then we would be very grateful!´

Proof that top level racing is as tough off the track as it is on it, Camier will be expecting a particularly difficult rookie season. `It will be very tough – especially with the likes of Stoner and Locatelli dropping down to join Vincent, Pedrosa and all the rest. When you look at the entry list there are around 20 riders capable of top ten finishes, so it is going to be a huge challenge just to get into the points, but I am setting regular top fifteen finishes as my objective and I think we can achieve that.´

Camier admits that he feels the pressure of his parents´ huge gamble, but he insists he has the determination and support to make sure it pays off. `I am lucky because my parents have never put pressure on me ever since I started racing. I used to see other kids there with their mums and dads shouting and screaming, but mine have been very supportive and this is the ultimate sacrifice they could make so I can´t help but feel a little bit of pressure. They have given me this chance so I just have to do everything I can to prove I am worth it.´
