Randy de Puniet ready for a new challenge

After an impressive 2002 season which saw Randy de Puniet establish himself as a serious contender in the 250cc class, including two podium finishes and a pole position, the French youngster will aim to be challenging for the quarter-litre title in 2003 after signing to ride an official Aprilia. Despite initial reports suggesting De Puniet had re-signed for Campetella and after rumours linking him with the WCM MotoGP team were quashed, the Parisian has confirmed he will continue in the same category, joining the team run by 125 rider Lucio Cecchinello.

`Campetella were not able to offer me the technical guarantees we had expected,´ he explains. `We had discussions with Peter Clifford about his MotoGP place, which would have been a huge challenge and one I was prepared to take on, but Lucio contacted my manager and a deal was sorted out very quickly. We arrived at an agreement within a week and I will be riding an official machine this season´.

Just short of his 22nd birthday, De Puniet takes on his third season in the World Championship with a clear objective: `So far I have only spoken with Lucio once – on the day we signed the contract – so we have not discussed the objectives of the team, but it is clear that with an official bike we have to aim for the ultimate prize. I hope to be in a position to win races and to fight for the title, although I know it won´t be easy. We will do some laps before the IRTA tests but the bikes are not ready so where don´t know where or when just yet. Hopefully it will be at the end of this month or the beginning of February´.

250cc, 2002, Randy de Puniet
