Masao Azuma excited by the challenge of team change

Japanese rider Masao Azuma is raring to go for the 2003 season and prepared to meet his own expectations and that of his new team. The 32 year old has left the Olivier Liegeois squad whom he has ridden for the last five years and now joins Finnish rider Mika Kallio in the Ajo Motorsports Honda effort. Azuma is already relishing the prospect of meeting his new mechanics who will help him in his 125 Championship push: ´Even though I have not seen the majority of the team before, we have had contact by the telephone and they seem very dedicated about what they do and are prepared to work hard, as am I to achieve our common goal. With this excellent attitude I do not have any apprehensions about the team. At the end of this month I will go to Finland and see the new Honda. The first real tests will be at the IRTA sessions in Jerez and I have no hesitation to say that my goal for next season will be to try for the title. 2002 carried no satisfaction for me and my victory in Rio I owed to the rain because I would have had no chance of success in the dry´.

Azuma has been enjoying a break in his homeland over the last two months and from December 12 has become a father to a little daughter: ´This is my first daughter and I'm really excited by her arrival! Her name is Tsukika and I think that she looks a lot like me when I was her age! I have been with her as much time as possible since the birth and have been generally resting after the season, also for fun I took part in a mini-bike race in Tokushima. I have helped them for many years and like to participate in the event.´

Azuma completed the last 125 campaign in eighth position overall and his only podium arrived with the win in Brazil. Overall the Japanese rider has notched ten GP victories in his career.
