Yamaha conclude latest tests in Valencia

Yamaha´s factory MotoGP line-up today completed three days of testing at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia. Unlike their previous two sessions at Jerez, the riders were blessed with ideal weather conditions and both Alex Barros and Carlos Checa lapped under Max Biaggi´s pole position time from last November.

The Brazilian, who went on to win the final Grand Prix of the 2002 season at the Spanish circuit, clocked a best time of 1´32.8, one tenth quicker than the Spaniard. Both riders were also able to follow up unfinished work from Jerez on the new chassis and on the fuel injection system after getting through some important tyre testing for Michelin. Checa and his young team-mate Marco Melandri both had minor crashes on the first day but escaped without injury or serious damage to their machinery. Checa was then hindered on the second day by problems with the engine and electronics but they were swiftly resolved.

Frenchman Olivier Jacque was not fit to ride at the test after damaging his hand in a crash at Jerez. The next track date for the Yamaha squad will be the IRTA tests at Jerez from the 21-23 February. Unofficial lap times: Alex Barros 1´32.8; Carlos Checa 1´32. 9; Shinya Nakano 1´33.9; Marco Melandri 1´34.7.
