Julián Simón to team up with Malaguti Semprucci next week

Julián Simón is currently preparing for his first full season in the 125cc World Championship after getting a brief taste of Grand Prix action with a smattering of wildcard rides in 2002. This season the Spanish youngster will line up alongside Fabrizio Lai aboard the all-new Malaguti machine, which the Italian scooter manufacturer unveiled in November with the association of Team Semprucci. Simón, who turns 16 next week, is hoping to celebrate his birthday with a succesful first outing with his new team.

`At the moment I am combining my normal school studies with my training programme,´ explains the teenager. `I did a strength test recently to check my physical state, and I am working hard in the gym to build myself up. I am also riding motocross every weekend. We will probably go to the Rijeka circuit in Croatia next week to complete a few laps with the bike. I haven´t been on a race machine for two months and I have to start gathering experience. We still haven´t got the new bike yet, so we will use a pair of last year´s Hondas until the IRTA tests, where we should have the 2003 model´.

Even though they will be running old bikes, the test provides Simon with the opportunity to get to know the technical staff he will be working with this season, and to meet his new team-mate, Fabrizio Lai. `I have already `bumped into´ Fabrizio on the track,´ smiles Simón. `We came into contact on more than one occasion in the Spanish Championship last season – it is a very competitive series. I´m sure we will have the opportunity to get to know each other better from now on though´.

Whilst looking forward to his first test of the New Year, Simón is really counting down the days to that first outing on the new machine: `They have been working for a long time on the bike and I think it will be very different to anything I have ridden before, with a completely new engine and chassis. The bike is an unknown quantity at the moment but I am confident that it will be very competitive´.
