Campetella Racing explain hopes for new season

Team Campetella Racing are currently preparing for their first test of the preseason at the official Aprilia sessions scheduled for the 5-6 February at Valencia. Franco Battaini and Sylvain Guintoli will mount their Aprilia kit 2003 machines for the first time, and Technical Director Eros Braconi is delighted to have them on board after losing Randy de Puniet at the end of last season.

`We planned to race with De Puniet but he got the chance to ride an official Aprilia and we did not want to block his path because we knew we could not get this bike´, says Braconi, who has been a central part of the Campetella set-up for 10 years. `We had already agreed with Alex Debón that he would not be continuing with the team so, after a brief search, we came up with Sylvain Guintoli and Franco Battaini´.

`We are happy with the structure we have in place for 2003,´ he continues. `To have an experienced rider like Battaini is very positive because he will bring many things to the track and to the garage. Also, as an Italian team it is always an advantage to have a home rider for the sponsors and the image of the team. Let´s not forget the great campaign he had last year too. Guintoli, on the other hand, has not really competed for the past year after deciding to step up to the top class as a test rider, but because of this he is very motivated. We are convinced that the two together can make a great season.´

After Valencia, the team plan to attend the IRTA tests and then have one more private session before the season starts. `Our objective for 2003 is to be the best private team in the championship. It has to be the goal of any team that has kitted bikes, whilst the objective of the official teams is obviously to win it,´ concludes Braconi. `I think it is well within our reach. Our longer term ambition is then to get official machinery in 2004 and make a challenge for the title´.
