Chris Martin looking to score with Seedorf Racing

Chris Martin is the latest British prospect to step up to the challenge of 125cc World Championship racing, after clinching a dream ride with the newly formed Grand Prix team funded by Dutch international footballer Clarence Seedorf. The reigning 125cc British Champion was picked up by the Spanish outfit after impressing in the final round of the 2002 European series at Cartagena, and rode a standard version of the Aprilia in tests with his new colleagues at Jerez last week.

`The team were really keen to get me on board and I have felt wanted ever since they first approached me at Cartagena,´ explains the 22 year old, who had built his reputation in the Spanish national series as well as on the domestic front. `I obviously impressed them and they seem to be happy with me. At the first test at Jerez I went three seconds quicker than I had on my Honda, and that was with the old bike. We will have full factory support from Aprilia so I expect to go even faster still when we get the new machinery for the IRTA tests.

Martin appears to have dodged the fate of recent British riders who have entered the world scene on less than competitive machinery, and his objectives are suitably high. `I am coming to win races,´ he declares. `I have beaten many of these guys before, and I have ridden twice as a wildcard at Donington, so I know what they are about. I know I can beat them on equal machinery, and I will have that. I am very pleased to have this opportunity and excited to get started and show what I can do.´

The involvement of AC Milan midfielder Seedorf will be more than just lending his name to the team, as Martin explains. `I was introduced to Clarence last Monday in Madrid, and he was very nice, very polite. He explained that he was giving his full backing to the team and he was keen to meet all of us. It seems that he is trying to become involved in lots of different sports, and this will be his first main venture into motorcycling.´
