Pablo Nieto explains his feelings about the 2003 Aprilia machine

I am happy because at the last test in Valencia we put in a lot of time and effort to get down to the bottom of the 2003 machine. Naturally when you have a brand new bike there is often a lot of work to be done in alteration and setting it up but over the two days we did enough to have a good balance and establish a strong platform. My initial sensation on the Aprilia was a little strange because the chassis and the engine hadn't been tested before. There were other more basic areas to fiddle around and get used to such as having two front brake disks compared to last years' model which had only one.

My times at Valencia were not bad but quick laps was not the priority of the test. Rather than risking a crash and injury we just wanted to make sure that everything worked well and get some track time. The conclusion is that we still have some work to do. The motor is a little lacking in power but this is normal at an early stage of pre-season testing. What is vital is to secure a good base from which to work and in this sense the days in Valencia were very useful.

The next test is not far away and we will be travelling to Jerez for the first IRTA session on the 19th. All the teams will be there it will be good to have all the riders from the same category to compare against, it will seem exactly like a GP, except without any podiums!
