Alzamora y Lorenzo soldier on with the development of the new Derbis after IRTA test

The IRTA tests at Jerez and Estoril were important dates in the pre-season work schedule of the team Caja Madrid Derbi Racing. Riders Emilio Alzamora and Jorge Lorenzo, were able to gauge opinion on their new machines after the sizeable restructuring of the race department within the firm.

In Jerez both riders showed willingness to ride and get back into a fast rhythmn but also had to show restraint and patience in view of the fact that the bikes are still not up to their maximum level. Alzamora recorded the best time in the first outing (in a day when the rain fell and laptimes were of no significant importance) and Lorenzo rose as high as sixth on the second day. In the test at Estoril which concluded last Monday, both riders were quite far away from the leaders setting the pace. Without a doubt in the process of the team´s evolution of the new bikes laptimes were of less importance compared to the feeling that their work was heading in the right direction and this was the evaluation of the recent weeks riding with the conclusion of the session in Portugal. $$$ Ex 125 World Champion Emilio Alzamora explained: `I took my time to adapt to the 125 again and then we tried many things. Every day we were making a lot of laps and this was very beneficial even though I would like to go a bit faster. We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but I hope the two days we have planned for Valencia will serve to help us find the right setup so we can attack at the first Grand Prix of the season. The team is working really hard and I am optimistic for the year ahead.´

Jorge Lorenzo evaluated the test: `The second day the track was not that good and it resulted in some slow lap times. We have to work on improving the performance of the engine but I am happy because the team is working really hard and I am finding everything a lot easier than last year. I rode 1.3 seconds faster than in the GP of Portugal in 2002 and this is a significant improvement at this stage. With the close of these IRTA test I am satisfied, even though we must be more ambitious and aim to be higher come the start of the season.´

The team and riders now head for further test on March 12 and 13 at Valencia. A few days afterward on March 16th they plan to make the team´s official presentation.
