Barros under pole record despite cool conditions at Estoril

MotoGP IRTA tests at the Estoril circuit in Portugal concluded today, with Alex Barros lapping under pole record time despite the track being largely unsuitable for testing until the afternoon. An overnight shower had left huge puddles at various points of the track surface and, although the sunshine did greet the riders on their arrival this morning, it was 1pm before they were able to make use of the good conditions, cancelling the lunchtime break to heat up an otherwise cool tarmac with some scorching lap times.

Whilst Barros was under the pole record on his Yamaha, setting a best lap of 1:39.694 compared to the 1:39.793 clocked by factory colleague Carlos Checa at last year´s Grand Prix, a further four riders were inside Loris Capirossi´s circuit lap record of 1:40.683. Checa and Ducati rider Capirossi were second and third fastest respectively, whilst Colin Edwards demonstrated clear progress on the Aprilia to clock the fourth fastest time ahead of Shinya Nakano on the Yamaha. Troy Bayliss and Andrew Pitt both suffered minor crashes, with Bayliss recovering to record the sixth fastest time of the day.
