Malaguti announce arrival on world scene

Malaguti arrived on the World Championship scene last weekend as they entered their brand new 125cc race bike into its first ever Grand Prix at Suzuka. The Italian scooter manufacturer, the third largest behind Aprilia and Piaggio, had announced their plans to compete at the end of last season, but the dream became a reality in Japan as both Fabrizio Lai and Julian Simon guided their prototype machines across the finish line in their first official appearances with the factory.

`The bike is brand new and this is a development year, so we can´t expect it to be fast from the start,´ said Italian Champion Lai, who finished just outside the points in sixteenth. `We tested lots of new parts in the winter which will not be ready until Mugello, but my personal hope is just to develop the bike and have the chance to ride it again in 2004.´

Spanish youngster Simon, who was nineteenth, added: `The bike is clearly not 100% ready yet but by the halfway point of the season we should be challenging the front group. At the moment we are a little behind but our aim is to finish all 16 races and pick points up bit by bit. I am very excited and very motivated to be contesting this season with Malaguti.´
