Mirko Giansanti hoping his first race success will spread throughout the season

Returning to the Italian Matteoni Racing team for 2003, the outfit with which he rose to GP prominence in bygone years, seems to have been a good move for Mirko Giansanti.
In Suzuka the Italian rider gained the same position he notched at the event last season by standing on the second step of the podium. Back then the brilliant start to the season could not be maintained and turned out to be the only time he would spray champagne in 2002. Now, with a new Aprilia, Giansanti has decided that this fresh and positive start would be the springboard for a successful campaign. This is what he had to say to motograndprix.com.

`I have adapted really quickly to the change between Honda and Aprilia and my expectations for the year are very different to how they were this time last season, which was a disappointing time,´ explained Giansanti who ended up with 15th position overall in 2002. `It´s fair to say that the result from the race in Suzuka was quite a surprise for me because for most of the weekend we practised in the wet and weren´t completely sure how best to set up the bike. We must have guessed right because finally during the race I could fight for the podium. I´m not saying win the race, because it was difficult to lead that group entering the last lap, but I took a good enough result. I think this is a good start to the Championship.´

The rider now is enjoying some days with his family in Terni, his hometown, while also continuing his physical training and waiting with confidence for the next race, at the end of this month, in South Africa: `Welkom is a circuit that I like, but for me what is more important is getting the bike feeling just right and we are very close to making it so. If the bike is working well then the circuit is of secondary importance. In Suzuka we were lacking a bit of speed and we are now focussing on this for the next race.´
