Nieto leads Aprilia front row at Welkom

Fonsi Nieto led an impressive Aprilia charge at Welkom today, with the Italian manufacturer taking all four front row spots for the Arenette Africa´s Grand Prix. The Spanish rider, who finished runner-up to Marco Melandri last season, set out determined to make up for a disappointing opening round at Suzuka and enjoyed a thrilling battle with his factory colleagues Manuel Poggiali, Franco Battaini and Randy De Puniet. Nieto's team-mate Toni Elias was also involved in the battle for top spot and headed the time sheets with just five minutes remaining, but the youngster crashed into the gravel and lost any chance of defending his position.

Elias slipped back to sixth place on the provisional grid as Nieto and Co. raised the tempo, with Poggiali finally elevating himself to second spot ahead of Battaini and De Puniet on the front row. Sebastian Porto was the highest placed non-Aprilia rider, guiding his Honda to fifth spot ahead of Elias. Naoki Matsudo continued his good form on the 2002 model Yamaha, whilst Anthony West completes the provisional second row on his Aprilia after clocking the eighth fastest time of the day.
