Youichi Ui defends pole at Welkom

Youichi Ui today sealed his first pole position since Rio 2001 with the quickest ever lap by a 125cc machine at the Phakisa Freeway. The Japanese rider clocked a best time of 1'40.834 in this afternoon´s final qualifying session to defend the provisional pole he set yesterday. Pablo Nieto put Ui under pressure in a high quality session which saw thirteen riders dip under the circuit lap record, but could only close to within 0.074 seconds of his fellow Aprilia rider.

Dani Pedrosa was one of a host of riders who were unable to lower their best efforts from yesterday, despite the blazing sunshine and improved track conditions. The Spanish Honda rider slipped from second position on the provisional grid down to seventh as Andrea Dovizioso and Alex De Angelis sealed front row starts alongside Ui and Nieto. Early series leader Stefano Perugini and Steve Jenkner, who finished third in the first round at Suzuka, also moved ahead of the Spaniard, whilst young Finnish hope Mika Kallio completes the second row in eighth
