Toni Elias undergoes operation in Barcelona to fix hand injury

Toni Elías underwent surgery yesterday at the Institute Dexeus in Barcelona on a hand injury he sustained during practice for the Arnette Africa´s Grand Prix at Welkom last weekend. Elías, competed in the 250cc GP on Sunday only after having a pain killing injection, and decided upon visiting the operating theatre after a consultation with Dr. Xavier Mir.

The surgery was a success yesterday afternoon, and permitting any last minute problems, the rider from Manresa is likely to take part in the Marlboro GP of España that is set to occur in Jerez on May 11, even though he is likely to be far from 100% fit.

`Toni Elías suffered a double fracture around the thumb. The first break is of the knuckle of the left thumb that has also torn the tendon. The second injury is a ruptured ligament affecting the metacarpal area of the thumb,´ explained Dr. Mir. ´The operation consisted of arranging the two fractures with crews and small fragments of titanium. Inside a week, Toni can begin his rehabilitation that should take about four weeks in total. If he wishes to race in the next 15 days at Jerez then we will make a plastic splint to help him use as much strength on the bike as possible´.
