Dovizioso a teenager without fear standing on the podium in Welkom
Part of the new generation of daring and fearless teenagers in the junior class of the World Championship, is Andrea Dovizioso, who earned his first career podium in Welkom. The 17 year old Italian, racing with the Scot team, battled continually onboard his Honda with the leading group; on the last lap he made an audacious move and gained the upper hand on two of his more experienced rivals in the category, German Steve Jenkner and Japanese rider Youichi Ui. He only trailed Dani Pedrosa to the line, a rider with which he is sometimes compared, but second place on the podium in South Africa is an excellent result for him to go on and boost his ambitions for the season.`On the last lap I was looking to pass Ui and gave everything I had´, he explained, confessing that the sensation had of climbing on the podium was awesome and one that he wants to continue: `In Suzuka I finished fifth and from that point I thought it would be possible to aim for a podium in the next few races. I am so happy but I also want to repeat this success as soon as possible. The next race will be in Jerez and there the Aprilias will be very strong.´. The rider from Forlí cannot pick a specific rider from amongst his peers as he regards as the main threat, `There are so many! Pedrosa, Jenkner, Ui…they are all very good and fast´, he claims, even though he claims that riding with fellow competitors much older and with more experience does not phase him: `No, I am neither hot or cold concerning this matter´ Dovizioso, who only last year made his debut in the World Championships and gained 16th position overall, now stands third in the standings, only three points away from Dani Pedrosa, who leads the table with thirty three.
