Nieto takes provisional pole at home track

Spanish rider Pablo Nieto gave an early indication of his intentions for his home Grand Prix with an impressive provisional pole position at Jerez this afternoon. Pablo, son of 12 + 1 World Champion Angel Nieto, set pole here last season before crashing out early in the race and he was straight back on the pace as the Gran Premio Marlboro de España got officially underway today. His time of 1´47.711 was 0.291 seconds within the pole record held by Youichi Ui.

Japanese rider Ui had led the session today but he was pushed back by a latin onslaught in the final stages as San Marino youngster Alex de Angelis, Spain´s Dani Pedrosa and Italian Lucio Cecchinello forced their way through to the provisional front row. Andrea Dovizioso also muscled ahead of Ui to head up the second row in fifth spot, with Stefano Perugini and Casey Stoner completing the top eight.

Meanwhile, World Champion Arnaud Vincent continued with the rapid development of the KTM, qualifying in eleventh.
