Consistent Steve Jenkner rises to the top

Steady, consistent and progressive - Steve Jenkner´s start to the 2003 season has mirrored his career. Born just a stone´s throw from the Sachsenring circuit, Jenkner has slowly risen through the ranks of 125cc World Championship competition, until arriving at the very top in Jerez at the weekend. It is the first time he has ever led the series since making his debut in 1997.

In six seasons in the minor category, the 26 year old has gradually established himself as a serious frontrunner. Last weekend he took his third consecutive podium of the season, finishing second behind Cecchinello after third place rides at Suzuka and Welkom.

The top step of the podium remains uncharted territory for Jenkner, who kicked off his career with 19th place in 1997, ended 17th in `98, took 15th in 99, and moved from 12th in 2000 to 11th in 2001. He took two podiums during this time, a total he boosted to seven in 2002 as he rose to fifth place in the overall rankings. Signed up by the Exalt Cycle Red Devil team, who won the championship with Arnaud Vincent last year and with Roberto Locatelli in 2000, Jenkner has taken another step forward in 2003 as he goes in search of his first victory and a title challenge.
