Poggiali heads Aprilia front row

Manuel Poggiali clung on to provisional pole in the first qualifying practice for the 250cc class as a last lap raid from Randy De Puniet faltered in the final split. The pair had enjoyed a three way tussle for top spot with Franco Battaini and were lapping together at the end of the session when Poggiali ran off track under pressure from De Puniet. With the chequered flag already out, the Frenchman pushed hard to dislodge the championship leader from the number one position on the provisional grid and was on course to do so until the final few corners, where he was unable to match the speed of Poggiali and Battaini and was forced to settle for third spot. Fonsi Nieto improved gradually throughout the session to clinch fourth spot and seal an all-Aprilia front row.

Nieto´s team-mate Toni Elias, winner of the last round at Jerez, qualified in fifth position to head up a second row which also includes Sebastian Porto, local rider Sylvain Guintoli and Naoki Matsudo.
