Youichi Ui: `I still have not realised 100% of my potential´

Eternal 125cc candidate, Youichi Ui is back amongst the leading positions in the standings after a 2002 season where he only managed to shine on brief occasions. The Japanese rider has changed teams and machinery and is gradually returning to the level and potential that made him such a strong force in years gone by. After his sixth position in Le Mans –which also places him in the same standing with regards to the Championship table – Ui offers his thoughts on the first few races of the season so far.

`After the first four GPs, I think I was running at maybe 70% of my capabilities. Everything did not exactly work out how I planned. The first race in Suzuka was under difficult weather conditions, in South Africa, I took pole but could not place in the top three because i ran off the track. At Jerez we had problems both in the practice and also the race. In general I have been running good in practice and qualification but the bike has not been working that well in the race. We have been looking a lot at the telemetry and we really have to fix this problem. Now I feel there is more pressure. I want to take a podium, it has been one year that I last climbed on the steps and the last time was in Mugello. The team is working hard and I believe we can do it´.

`This year is different to other seasons. There isn´t just a few fast riders, there are many that are capable of springing a surprise, but after these first few races I am relaxed; even if nothing special has happened yet. The next races in Mugello and Barcelona can be very important for the Championship. We are now facing the GP of Italy and it´s a track that I don´t mind. I want to take as many points as possible; I don't want to be only fourth or fifth´.
