Stoner takes maiden pole

Australian teenager Casey Stoner took his maiden Grand Prix pole at Mugello this afternoon in a sweltering final qualifying session for the 125cc race. Provisional pole holder Youichi Ui was one of several riders who failed to improve their times from yesterday in searing temperatures approaching 33ºC , but Stoner scorched to a new pole record of 1´58.914 – despite never having raced here on a 125 machine before. Ui eventually dropped to the back of the second row as a host of Aprilias swamped seven of the top eight positions, with only Andrea Dovizioso on the Honda showing any resistance to the Italian factory.

Stefano Perugini came within a whisker of snatching pole from Stoner, lapping within 0.063 of the youngster to take second place on the grid, whilst Alex De Angelis and Pablo Nieto also sealed front row starts. Steve Jenkner made a late charge to move up to the second row in fifth, just ahead of Stoner´s team-mate and team manager Lucio Cecchinello. Dovizioso edged out Ui for seventh.
