Shinya Nakano satisfied with his best result of the season

After qualifying on the front row for the first time in almost a year, Shinya Nakano declared before Sunday´s race that he was ready to fight for a top five finish. The Yamaha D´Antín rider kept his promise, getting a great start and fighting with the three Italians - Rossi, Capirossi and Biaggi – before they escaped and enjoyed their own private battle for the top three positions. Nakano defended fourth place until the final lap, when he was caught by the surprising Makoto Tamada, but fifth still represented his best finish of the season so far and sealed the top placing for a Yamaha rider.

`Before Le Mans we attended a test at Mugello, so we already had the base set-up for the bike,´ explains Nakano. `On the second day we were able to really refine our settings and I managed to clock the third quickest time – just 0.059 seconds from Rossi. I was really happy to be on the front row after such a long time.

`I got a good start in the race and I was able to go with the lead group. I tried to stay with the three Italians but they maintained a strong rhythm and they gradually escaped – even though myself and the bike were at 100% and I had chosen the perfect tyres. I kept my rhythm going until the final lap but Tamada came from behind and passed me. I was disappointed not to hang on to fourth but I think I gave everything. I am satisfied with the result – my best of the season. The next race is in Barcelona, where I live, and I will be going for my first podium on the M1.´
