From telemetry to twelfth – a bizarre weekend in the life of Klaus Nohles

After failing to secure a ride for the 2003 season, German rider Klaus Nohles last winter began a new career as a telemetrist. Working for the Aprilia Germany team of Chaz Davies and Dirk Heidolf, the 26 year old explained that he needed a secure income to provide for his family and could no longer rely on the unpredictable nature of racing motorcycles. However, with Heidolf ruled out of the Gran Premi Marlboro de Catalunya this weekend, the opportunity fell to Nohles to put his leathers back on and straddle a 250cc machine for the first time in two years.

`I asked the team manager Dieter Stappert if I could ride in place of Dirk at Mugello but three days before the race Christian Pistoni brought in some money and got the ride,´ explains Nohles. `I said there was no problems for me because the money was important for the team but things didn´t work out so Dieter said maybe it would be possible to ride at Catalunya. I found out for definite on Wednesday and I was so happy. At first it was really funny but then the reality hit me and I was a bit nervous´.

Nohles´ progression throughout the weekend was notable - improving his lap times by two seconds from the first free practice session to the final qualifying, when he sealed a third row start. `First of all it was really funny to get back on to the 250 because it felt like it was the first time I had ever sat on a road bike. I just concentrated on getting out there on my own and getting used to the bike and I gradually got faster and faster. The only problem was my fitness because I have done nothing for the last seven or eight months apart from sit in front of a computer. At the end of each session I felt I could push more but I had absolutely no power. On Saturday I decided to do less laps and reserve some energy for Sunday´s race.´

It turned out to be a wise decision, as Nohles fought to an incredible twelfth place in searing temperatures reaching 34 degrees. Now he has a taste for racing again, he hopes his effort will be enough to guarantee more action in the future. `I was obviously very tired by the end of the race because of the heat but I just kept going and I was so happy to finish in the points. I enjoyed the race – it is something I never wanted to give up doing. I don´t know if I will get another chance this season but I hope so. My dream is to be a racer again, but only if I am earning some money for my family!´
